Emptoris Empower: Risk put centre stage in Emptoris 8

Posted on Thursday, October 1 by Registered CommenterDavid Rae in | Comments2 Comments

The latest iteration of Emptoris' software solution, Emptoris 8, has put risk at its core, among more than 200 enhancements to the product.

By partnering with Equifax and pulling in data from that relationship, as well as from internal systems and suppliers themselves, the software company hopes it can tap into an opportunity which is near the top of every CPO's priority list.

It's a worthy move by Emptoris and a valid effort to address an obvious and current need - and having seen a brief demonstration here at Empower, it also looks fairly intuitive with a lot of the onus for compliance being passed to the supplier.

But, here's the question. Is risk a technology issue or is it a people/process issue? For sure, technology can help but it's no replacement for good systems - a point I'm sure Emptoris would agree with.

D & B also have a supplier financial risk package called "supplier portfolio manager". This I have found to be sufficient for the purpose of identifying suppliers who have reached a high risk of insolvency. My view is, as a procurement professional there are a lot more factors that have to be considered before a true judgement can be made and an early warning system is sufficient to get you started. Once you have identified the risk, direct investigation is always the best route.

I have validated that risk is a more granular element of "threats" and as such, neither a technology or a people/process issue. It is a way of viewing the world that quantifies the gap between desired objectives and threats to those objectives at any level. isk avoidance or mitigation "Controls" can be your people/process and your technology solutions. Therefore, these elements would be embedded in the active risk managemnt solution. I caution that risk is a "living and breathing" target so no solution (however complex) should be static once developed.
